Most Common Summer Bugs

It’s Summertime! It is a time for outdoor adventures, barbecuing with friends and family, and going on that vacation you’ve dreamed of for the past few months. But before you load up the car and make a beeline to the beach, let’s talk about the unwelcome guests you may receive in your home. That’s right, bugs love summer as much as you do! We understand how nothing ruins a perfect summer evening faster than swatting away mosquitoes or finding ants in your kitchen.

Why are there more bugs in the summer?

Summer bug species are various, as insects are cold-blooded and more active in warm weather. All foliage and flora are in full bloom by this time, increasing their food supply. And the higher the temperature of their environment is, the more rapid their feeding and reproduction rates will be.

An excellent place to start is by moderating your thermostat’s functionality and ensuring it doesn’t get too hot and humid inside. To further reduce moisture production in your home, you should fix any leaky plumbing or air conditioning units and use a dehumidifier in areas prone to humidity, like your basement.

Summer bug species can be various, and their existence and breeding habits can depend on factors such as your local climate and plant life. Dealing with summer bugs in the house involves identifying insect types and implementing the appropriate prevention methods. We’ll cover some of the more common species and show you how to get rid of summer bugs in your house so you and your family can enjoy the season pest-free!

Ants

Ant colonies can be particularly active during the warmer months, emerging from the ground to forage for food and build/expand their nests. While small and unimposing in size, they’re a hardy, resistant, tight-knit bunch that communicate the location of food & water to each other via pheromone trails. Ants may enter your home for various reasons, often seeking shelter from the elements or new grounds to construct nests. Certain species, such as carpenter ants, may produce alates that can fly, swarm, and mate during the summer.

The best way to avoid an ant infestation is to make sure your floors and countertops are free of food material and that whatever food you have is properly sealed. Ants are particularly fond of sugar, so pay special attention to protecting sugary snacks or drinks.

Flies

Flies, often seen as a common summer nuisance, can also pose a health risk. We tend to overlook the fact that they can be carriers of disease, especially during warmer periods. Bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella can easily hitch a ride on a fly and find their way into your household, potentially causing health issues.

Preventing flies from entering your home is a straightforward process, although the occasional one may slip in through an open window.  The key is to manage your fruit supply and consume or dispose of fruit before it becomes overripe, as this is a major attraction for flies. Additionally, ensure that large amounts of trash are not left in or around your home for extended periods. If you suspect a larger fly population on your property, consider using fly paper near windows and garbage bins as a deterrent.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are distinctly recognizable for their flat, oval-shaped bodies, long antennae, and brown coloration.  They are well known for being one of the most adaptable pests, some theorizing that they may very well outlive us humans at some point.  They reproduce rapidly, can transmit diseases and allergens, are generally unsightly, and leave a terrible impression on any visitors you receive.

To prevent cockroaches from entering and reproducing:

  1. Keep your home clean, properly store food, and thoroughly dispose of trash.
  2. Suppose you suspect an infestation.
  3. Place store-bought traps in areas of interest, such as under sinks and behind appliances.

They can also be very fond of old books and paper in general, so if you have any of that lying around your basement or attic, it may be best to get rid of it entirely or have anything important moved to a storage facility.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are persistent and common during summertime, especially outdoors, where they can quickly ruin backyard fun. These blood suckers are known for their irritating bites and, in rare cases, may transmit serious diseases such as malaria, depending on their place of origin. While the males tend to only feed on plant nectar, the females are interested in us as a food source and are usually cared for outside the home with bug spray.

Eliminating any standing water found on your property will be the most effective way to eliminate mosquitoes in your home. Bird baths, flower pots, and gutters are all prime spots for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. You may also want to treat your yard with insecticide for an added layer of protection.
